STUDENT HIHGHLIGHT: Kim Ivey

I had some yoga workout tapes that I did at home for several years before joining kinetics. However, when I joined Kinetics in July 2016 for the Little Black Dress Challenge, at the end of the 21 day challenge, I decided to try a hot yoga class! It was hard and nothing like the workout tapes! I could barely do a downward dog:-). I kept attending, though, for about 5 weeks and then the teacher changed so I decided to try your warm yoga class and have been hooked ever since.

With regular practice and great instruction (I love how you adjust us to make sure we are positioned correctly), I’ve found that I’m more limber, have more energy for my other primary workout (running) and I’m definitely stronger – way stronger! I have more stamina, as well. I feel that I’ve gotten more defined in my shoulders and arms because of my yoga practice. My weeks go much better when I have my Wednesday session and I always exit feeling rejuvenated and refreshed, ready to tackle the rest of the week.

Don’t give up! The first few sessions can be strenuous if you haven’t done yoga before, but you don’t have to be perfect. Just do the best that you can. Over time, you’ll be amazed at how your practice will improve and how much it also improves your overall well-being and mental health. I have a friend who has been reluctant to try yoga because she’s afraid she won’t be able to do the poses and will embarrass herself. So another piece of advice is that when you are in the middle of doing yoga, really the only people you are aware of are the teacher and yourself. I find that everyone else sort of fades into the black. It’s what actually makes it a very serene, peaceful experience for me and what keeps me coming back, week after week!
